Round Baler question for Steve From New Holland

Steve,

I am planning to go to a consignment auction next week. It has a few New Holland round balers that I am interested in, but I am confused by all the numbers. Is there a convenient website that lists the balers by bale size, manufacture date, chain vs. belt, open throat vs. closed throat, etc.?
Kelly C. gave me a great website that showed some of the tests on some of the balers, (posted 2/2/04) but I am wondering if there is a New Holland site that would be helpful.

Warren, I really appreciate you asking me, but what I know about round balers can be put on a very small piece of paper. I have been in service for 27 years, but I doubt that I worked on more than 5 round balers. The area I live in is largely Amish, and untill recently, they did not buy round balers. One thing I don't do is give advice about something I know nothing about. Big Jim's advice sounded good to me. Steve

If you are looking at New Holland balers, you are best to stick to one of the late model chain type balers with air bag tension system or else go with a belt type New Holland baler. I believe the 853 and 855 are late model air bag chain type balers. There are also some other models with air bags, but I can't recall the numbers right now. The belt type balers are all open throat and make a nice tight bale. The 640,644, 648 are all 4'x5' size belt type (the 640 is the oldest and 648 the newest). Ditto for the 650, 654, and 658 which make a 4'x6' bale. There are lots of other belt models also, mostly the model numbers begin with a "6".

Thanks for the helpful information, I do appreciate it. When I am looking at the round balers, is it readily evident which ones have the air bag tensioners? Is the air bag visible.

Sorry for the late response. Pull the side covers out when you look at the baler. They usually fold out on most balers. You should be able to see the air bags then.
