Steve - Our neighbour has decided to get out of the hay business and has a 488 for sale ($6900 Canadian). All his machinery has been kept in like new condition. Just wondering if a 488 would be worth retiring my 479 (still in good shape) and what the differences are between them. Thanks in advance !!

Jim, the 488 was a teriffic machine for New Holland, but so was the 479. No difference except the pto driveline. I don't know how much American dollars that is, but that sounds high to me. Steve

Thanks Steve. I've only replaced the wobble drive belt once (didn't break, just getting worn),skid shoes , guards and knife sections on my 33 year old 479. My sons were just getting antsy about an "old" machine. The only reason I asked was that well maintained machinery doesn't come along very often these days. Sure am glad to see even more guys getting out of the hay business. Sooner or later, the real value of good hay will be realized.
