I bought a PT-10 last hay season. I use it to cut blue stem hay only. The sickle does a good job of cutting, the problem is the grass won't feed through the rollers. So when there gets to be a build up of grass in front of the rollers (if it doesn"t slug through) it will stall the reel clutch or carry grass over the top of reel. I have a manual on the machine and have made every adjustment i know of to correct the problem with no progress. I have adjusted the lean bar height, adjusted reel height/tine timing, set the spacing and tension on the rollers in multiple combinations with no real change. I'm starting to wonder if the top roller (RUBBER) is wore out not letting it grip the grass and pulling it through at an even pace. Any ideas, Thank You, MARK

your cables maybe to tight, try loosening them off a bit....Jim

I have had success by adjusting the position of the reel, by moving it more up and closer to the rollers in alfalfa. I think the manual suggests a more down position for the reel in tangled, downed crops, but it seemed that it pulled the reel too far away from the conditioner rollers and I had feeding problems. I also have the pitch of the teeth set out so that the teeth come about one inch away from the rubber roll at its closest point. It sounds that you have already tried different reel and tine adjustments, however. I believe that a different sprocket could be used to affect the speed of the reel on its chain drive possibly.

Tim, I have made lots of ajustment on the reel up and down along with the pitch on the teeth. I remember the manual calling for that 1/2 inch clearance and if you get the reel too high the teeth will catch on the top of the cowling. However you touched on a idea on reel speed. First of all the manual calls for two sprockets for reel speed and i have the 10 tooth on the machine which is for the slower reel speed. However in my meadow there is a long downward slope and the machine works perfect as long as were going down hill. PTO rpm (reel speed) or ground speed makes some difference. Slower is better. My next possible fix was to change the angle of the sickle head/ rollers. It's now set at 0 degree angle and the manual tells how to set it up at a downward angle. I feel this may help since it works better when going down hill or is the angle of the sickle that big of deal. Thanks Mark

I'm operating older 500 & 1400. So they're simular. I'm wondering if the reel is taking the cut away from the sickle bar soon and evenly enough to avoid the crop's bunching up into the auger?

Fern, I'm running the 10 tooth sprocket for reel speed which is the smallest available i think. However heavey grass and slow RPM speed with a faster ground speed worked best and this is how i got by last year. With lots of stops and unjamming the reel with bunching grass. Sometimes to the point the sickle would sled over uncut grass when bunching got real bad.

have you made the adj to the reel for when it releases the grass, there is a adj for when the teeth of the reel say dumps the grass in front of the rollers. I have a hesston 1071 ,just a little newer than yours, I have also noticed that if the hay is really dry I'll get a carry over on the reel ,but it feeds through on the time around ,and that doesn't happen very often.hope this helps

Bryan, This is the adjustment i have made the most since it is easy to make in the field. I found a point that the (teeth timing) worked the best but still had lots of bunching and carryover problems. Thanks, Mark
