Can anyone explain "frost seeding" to me. Last fall I planted a field to brome grass and lost about 80% to wash out from the next evenings 5 inch rain. Around here (south central Kansas) brome is usually planted in fall. Its a cool season grass. I'm concerned about weed and erosion control if I wait till next fall to re-seed. Any help would be appreciated.

Works good with legumes like clover, etc... but brome seed is pretty loose and fluffy. If it doesn't get wet or snowed on right away it may just blow away. It's worth a shot though, nothing worse than weeds in your hay/pasture.

Frost seeding is done in the spring. when the snow is mostly gone, probrobly some left around the edges of the field . and you still get freezeing at nite, and thawing during the day. Notice how the bare ground kind of honeycombs, thats when you do it . If your spreading fertilizer, have the co-op mix seed with fert and spread it .

Old's right; it works. I haven't done it on more than a few acres, but it works well with clover. Mguy.

I do what your talking about, I wait for it to snow some, then after there in a little on the ground I go out and seed and let the snow cover the seeds. That way as it melts off it pulls the seeds in to the ground. I do that a lot with clover.
