Brett: The most important item is live power not how much power. If you have 25 to 35 hp with live pto, you can bale all the hay you probably want to handle in a day. I used to bale with Farmall 300 and a NH Super 69 baler with thrower. I have baled 4,500 per day on numerous ocasions. I always found that for haying with square bales manpower was a bit more crucial than horse power.

I have a 14T Jd baler and have ran it on a Super M and my 450. I really liked running it with the 450, becides haveing true live PTO (the SM had an M&W live PTO) the TA made baleing veriong windrows and headlands a breez. Now I guess I'll find out if the 450 has enough snort to pull a NH 315 with a 70 thrower on the hills I have to hay this year. But then again this 450 isn't average, with 77 hp on the belt it can hold its own.

You can bale with just about any old tractor you can find. I used my H on my NH68 most of last year and it worked fine. I did do the last 20 acres with my Farmall 400 and you can for sure tell the difference. Didnt break any shear bolts with the 400. I went through them by the gross with the H. Live PTO and the Constant power it provides makes a difference with that.
I think 50 hp instead of 20 hp made it bale better also. The old H would just buck when getting into heavy hay. With the 400 you couldnt even tell it was running the baler.
I would recomend a Farmall M or 400( that because I only us red tractors) A Farmall 300 would also do a great job on that baler.

yup i ran one on a Ford 9n when i was 10 years old. you learn to double clutch on the backswath. i would recomend a minimum of 30 - 35 horse. Live PTO is a big advantage.
