I have a 13-7" M-F drill that is in perfect shape, the thing looks like it's only ten years old it's in such good shape. I have heard some people used these untill the early eighties before buying a new drill but I have also heard it's not worth using. The field I'm planting is 40 acres and was in beans last year. I want to plant an 80/20 mix of alfalfa/orchard grass but not sure weather to use this drill or not. If I use the M-F I'll pull it with a Farmall 560,what MPH should I pull it at, also I was told not to follow the settings that are printed under the hopper lids is this true? Thanks for the help James

If the drill is in good shape and you have it on hand, why not use it ? I have a 10' MF that I still use. The oats and clover come up and make a real nice stand. One side plants about 10% heavier than the other if they are set the same.

If you are concerned about the planting rate, set it very shallow and pull it over some hard, bare ground for 20 feet. Get off and look at your seed count. You can double check that if your acre counter is working, or go through the trouble of measuring the seed in, planting a known area, and measuring the seed left in the box.

I usually go in 3rd gear at about 3/4 throttle on my H, depending on how dark it is getting.
