Woods Offset Mower

What are the pros and cons of offset mowers. I saw one in the paper, it is a Woods 212 OS. The guy said it was 12' with two gear boxes and it was offset so about three feet stuck out from the right side of the tractor. I've never used an offset mower or considered one but as I got thinking it doesn't seem like a bad idea as long as it still mows everything the tractor wheels ride over. Based on the fact that it sticks out three feet I assume it will mow what the left tractor wheel rides over. I'll pull it behind a JD 4020D.

Just looking for opinions, good or bad, on this mower. Also, he wants $1000 for it and he says its in good shape, does that seem reasonable. Based on what I've seen at auctions with straight mowers it sounds good but I don't know about this model specifically or offset mowers in general. Thanks.

It is old, check for play in the gearboxes and drive tubes between gearboxes, if they have play the blades will hit each other.

Offsets are great for mowing along treelines. They are common in orchards (although 12' is a little wide for an orchard). Keeps the tractor and operator out of the branches. Also useful for mowing edges of ponds, etc. I don't know how old it is, but a mower like that in good shape will bring more than $1000 where I live.
