OK guys what disk mowers are good and bad, what are good points and bad of different ones? Looking at a M&W 8' don't know the model but they want $1750 for it. Is that reasonable? It is cheaper than most I've seen. Thanks Brian

One of the things to remember about a disc mower is that the discs run at about 3000 rpm. It is essential that the gear train is kept well lubricated. I used to change the oil in the cutterbed every year, and I never had any problems with either the Vicon or the Lely mowers that I had. A lot of mowers get a bad name merely because they have been run using old/dirty/worn out oil in the drive train.

Beware, beware, beware of things that appear too good to be true (and also of used disc mowers).

Only 3 main cutter bar patents. Everybody else just makes on license. You have a shaft drive where a solid or sectional shaft goes through the enite bar, a multiple small gear bar which uses a small amount of hydraulic fluid, and the large gear bar which runs in gear oil.

First thing to check for is wear and alignment of disc turtle shells. My personal bias (form experience with all the others) is toward the shaft drive. The others make good mowers too, just bias. Brand spanking new NI $4950, 8' with shaft bar.

There are many different patents curently used concerning the disc mower. There are 7 shaft driven mower styles out there. Lely/Vermeer, NI, Old Style BH that used a Kuhn patent, Current NH, Current Fella, Current Agrostrov, and the M&W/Sasoki design. The Lely/Vermeer and NI are superior to the other mowers but they all cut hay and will work.
