Before all the snow, I saw an ad in the paper for a New Idea 325 2-row narrow picker. Called the number, lady answered. Asked about the picker. Belonged to her late husband. She said "my husband bought it new in 1979, and it only picked 40 acres a year for 6 years, then we got rid of the cows and quit picking corn. I want $2000 for it." OK, I thought. That's about the right price for a good 325 around here. So I go to look at it. She takes me out to where it is. Sitting in a grove of multiflora roses, in the same spot since 1985 where it was parked after its last harvest. Chains rusted up, rubber parts rotted away, holes rusted in the bottoms of the elevators. I said I wasn't interested, that for the price I was expecting a nice picker. She said adamantly "It's only done 240 acres! Why does everybody think they're going to get it for nothing?" So the search for a 2-row narrow picker continues.

I'm feeling better already. Recently bought a 323 with two years of work (about 80 acres) before storage about 24 years ago.
Looks and runs real well. Paid 800 georges.
Really need a good popcorn picker as the ole 323 takes too much off the ends of the little gems even with the rolls as tight as possible.
And so it goes in 2004 and more.

Tim,
I know you are a long way from Ohio , but on Feb. 14 the Coldwater Young Farmers are having their annual consignment auction. It is a large sale, with lots of small livestock equipment and 4 - 6 row size stuff. Always a lot of pickers, (since it is still a picking area) there. Thye are getting cheaper every year. I saw a good nice shedded 311 last year, 95.00. 325 with 8 roll avg. shape $550. Of course 1 rows there too. The bill has not come out yet for their sale. I will watch and see what they get. If this helps you any.
I agree that is a shame on the 325 you looked at that had sat out and rusted up. In a shed it would have been a nice one. There was a mint 323 at the Coldwater sale about four years ago, bought new in 1983, picked 315 acres in its lifetime, $2600.

Tim,

My dad passed away a year and a half ago. He has a NI picker, but I don't know how many rows, or wide or narrow. I will check and let you know, as it will never be used by us again. If it is what you are looking for, it's in NE PA, not too far from you.

Or the irony of finding something that is useful yet the owner cares not that it just dies a slow death.

I know of an Oliver 1950 sitting that the ol' boy has never returned any of my calls. Fair looking rig just parked out behind his barn going to crap. Seen this all to often. I gave up trying to find a Fox forage chopper after 2 yrs. Best of luck on your search. Should I see something I will post.

If you would ever make it up to Wi, we got an old Fox you could have for about $200. It's an old 546, w/ hay and 1 row corn head. We have 5 or 6 screens for it, and a few extra parts, knives etc. Was a fairly decent machine and used to run it with our Massey 285 or our Ollie 1600, but our 1755 was too big for it and we got a 3000 for FREE from the neighbors, just had to grease it up after a few years of sitting, adjust the shear bar and buy a 1000 pto stub for our 1755. We would be glad to get rid of the 546, it's been faithful to us but now it's been replaced.

Got an AGCO dealer 60 mi west of me that has at least 2 machine sheds full of old Oliver and Hart Parr stuff. I think most of 'em ran when he brought them in, but now 90% are stuck and sinking in the dirt floor. Was in the shed by his shop, I'd guess 40+ tractors rusting. Begged him to sell me some. He always says he's not ready yet, and I'm too old to wait for the "sale"!!!

While admittedly the whatevers belong to their rightful owner and they can do what they want to with them including watching equipment slowly rot into the ground we have the ultimate A--hole here. He has a whole bunch of my favortie brand stuff rotting away in his pastures but he brings a piece or two a year up by the road and takes his good old time cutting it up and hauling it to the scrap yard just so all us old iron chasers can watch him do it. He knows we go down to the scrap yard to look but he makes sure that each and every part is torched enough to make it usless. Now what kind of enjoyment could he be getting from this?

I knew a guy that used to do that (collect a bunch, then cut them up) with old Chevrolet pick ups. He would have half a dozen or more from a particular series (like 67-72 model years, for example) and they would sit at his shopgathering rust. Some ran, most didn't, and he'd tell you that he didn't want to sell any parts off of this one or that one for whatever reason. Then, you'd go by some weekend, and find him taking a "gas ax" to the entire group, load it on a trailer for scrap. When asked why, he'd say "I want to get this place cleaned up". Odd thing, was, he'd only have it "clean" for a couple of weeks before he'd start the next collection, which might be Cosmopolitans, ---really strange fellow.

Shep, there is going to be an auction over in Bangor, PA in March where there is a Fox chopper with a grass head (that can mean a windrow pickup or a sickle bar for green chop, depending on who's saying it). However, knowing what beasts Fox choppers are in terms of weight and girth, I'm not sure how easy it would be to get it to Florida!

Thanks Tim(nj). Travel from PA to FL for that is cost prohibitive for me. For clarification of original post - was searching Southeast for 2 yrs. then gave up.
