Does a flail mower do a good job for finish mowing? How short can they cut? Are they difficult to maintain or hard to get parts for?

Thanks for any help

I had A John Deere flail chopper that was no longer needed. I took the rear plate off, removed the auger and spout and sealed off the fan. It did A beautiful job.I used it to trim around crops and along farm roads.I also cut pastures with it. It was A job sharping all those knifes though.

My Ford 917 flail mower does a respectable job. It's not quite finish mower quality, but it's a lot more forgiving if your ground isn't perfectly flat or you have a rock sticking up here and there. I mow 3 to 4 acres each week and that 5' mower saves me a lot of time (used to do it with a garden tractor) with much less machine maintenance. It may not be like a pristine suburban lot, but it's as nice as any athletic field when you're finished.

well it depends on the flail, my father had a mott that was a fisnish cut flail and would leave almost a golf course finish, supper high speed, but then there are also some flails that are made for rough cut and can chop up a 3 inch cedar tree too, but wont hardly cut grass, just lay it down. it all depends all flails are not the same

Well, a flail mower will cut right down to the ground, if you want to..!! They don't leave as neat a finish to the cut as a finish mower....passable, but not quite as neat. They DO require more power, but do a better job of cutting than a BushHog.. Depends on the model, but I know all parts are readily available for my Ford Flail.. Not at all hard to maintain..just grease, and the blades last a long time.. They will NOT cut saplings and that kind of thing..
