I am looking at replacing my old 14T square baler with a round baler this year. I am getting too old to handle the bales myself and want to switch to the round bales.
I have seen lots of posts about the different square balers and which ones are most reliable (JD and New Holland). I would like to know if there is a site that summarizes the strong and weak points of some of the round balers. If I bought new, I could stop at the dealer and listen to his propaganda.
I do not need really big bales - probably the 4X5 size would be adequate. I bale mostly alfalfa/grass mix hay and would like to retain alfalfa leaves as much as possible. I assume this leaves out the old New Holland chain balers. Since I am looking at baling only 10-15 acres per year I am not going to be buying a new one, but rather a fairly inexpensive one.
New Holland is most popular around here and I will have the greatest selection of those, but John Deere is faily common along with some of the newer Vermeers.
What about the preservative applicators, are these really necessary?

The 3 rd thursday of febuary will be a consignment auction in dodgeville that will have balers on it. Starts at 8:30 am at hennessy implement. Will be a good selection of balers there. Take your time and take your pick. The balers later in the day will bring less money. Also will be other dealer consignment sales this spring around the area too. One will be down at Platteville the first part of march. Not sure when but hellnbrands will have one too over at lake mills. Feel free to get ahold of me about hennessey's Me and the wife will be there most of the day.

Thanks for the info. I know about the Dodgeville consignment sale, but thanks for the date. I don't know anything about the platteville sale, is that as large as the Dodgeville one? I really appreciate the great info and help on this site.

Warren I would recommend a Vermier 504G. AT least that�s what I am buying when my hay stash gets back up there.
Makes 4x5 bales, Runs on less HP maybe 40 hp.
Open thought design and you can get one from the 80's for about $3500

I bought a 504G last year and am having trouble starting bales unless the hay is in absolutely perfect condition. I have baled 100 or so bales with it. I was told (after I bought the baler) that the problem was in the design because it is a closed throat baler. Are you sure it is considered an open throat design? Is there a way to fix this starting problem?

Or a good F model, I got mine for $1600 - mine is a 605F, the big bales. Any of the F or newer Vermeers are good.

Around here New Holland, JD, Vermeer, & Gehl are pretty popular.

What HP req does that 605F have? I was looking at the 504 because I only have 50hp.

I have rolling hills, & pull it with my 85hp Ford 7700. Works well could get by with less, fluid in all tractor tires. I'm not sure how low I could go on hp - next in line for me would be a IHC 300 & that would be too few, so hard to tell. Oh, I guess the 960 would have more horses, but I have a weak pto clutch & only 1 hyd on it so no point hooking it up...

Kelly, my next door neighbor used to pull his with a 5000 Ford; worked good on flat or slightly rolling land. I'd want more HP (and weight) for steeper ground.....

Around here a NH 650 (up to 4x6) runs about $7500. I love mine, my dad bought one new and I liked it so well I sold my NH 851 and got one as soon as I could afford it. Great balers, easy to work one. A little harder on teeth than my 851 but no comparison on bale quality. The belts were in bad shape when I got it, was able to roll 1500 rolls before I broke one. This winter I replaced 4 and cut the other 2 to length (one was my new belt and 1 a spare I kept made up). Made my best remaining belt into a spare. I'm set up for preservative (propionic acid) but I've never used it on round bales. Started going ahead and wrapping my wet hay if I thought it might rain. Costs less and I dont have to use up my storage.

I have a NH 850 didn't cost me much and seems to work very good, saw one the other day for $995. The only problem I have found is that you need about a 60HP tractor to pull most of the round balers, not all of them just most. The belt balers are good but seem to have a few more problems with brake downs mostly belts.

I would not be afraid of the New Holland chain style. Just get newer than the 850 model. An 855 would be fine. The bottom is enclosed so you really don't see that much diff than the belt jobs. I know where there is a nice 855 one owner he wants to sell $5000.00 it is nice. But for all more you have why don't you just have it done for 8 to 10 dollars a bale. Take several years to pay unit on that few acres.

Thanks for the reply. You are right, it would be much more economical to hire it out. But around here (Madison, WI) I would have trouble getting someone out here just when I want it done. I would always be the last one and it would be about a month after it was ready. Holding down a full time job, I find the baling a relaxing challenge and keeps me in touch with my land. I really like the feeling of a job well done and knowing that I put up some real nice quality hay. I guess being raised on a farm has stuck with me for these 50 years!

I will keep you in mind once I find the round baler. Looks like you live in Minnesota, why not drive your Farmall down here tomorrow to pick it up! Bet you would freeze off your muffler! Cold here about -12 degrees, bet it is a lot colder where you are.
