A 272 is 7' a flail mower that conditions by cutting the hay in small pieces. Not something you want if you're going to do alfalfa, as it beats off too many leaves. It will leave the stubble a little higher and more ragged looking than a sickle or disk machine, but it will mow anything without plugging. It will require at least 50 HP. I have used a 279 9', and now have an M-C 9-E rotary scythe, which is the same type of machine. My customers like the chopped hay better than the long hay that comes out of the mower/conditioner. They have not, as some will claim, had trouble with animals choking on the shorter pieces of hay. (after all, how tall is the grass that a horse chooses to graze in a paddock 3 feet or 3 inches?), I can get more hay in a bale, and stuff that is a little too old and stemmy is made softer by the flail action.
