Rigging a plow-tripping mechanism

Hey again.
Well, since I don't make a practice of ignoring the advice of those much wiser and more experienced than myself, it looks like I need to build a trip mechanism for my plow. What I have is the old mounted plow that went with a JD L/LA. I had planned on setting it up like the Cub-193 plow, which bolts directly to the inverted drawbar and has a couple of heavy shock-absorbing springs in place of a trip. What would you guys do if you were in my place? (And buy a better plow isn't an option! I'd love to, but I'm about to go back to school and won't be able to afford much of anything for the next four years.) I could try to go with some kind of shear-pin or shear bolt at the drawbar, but my guess is that it'll either shear too soon and keep me from plowing, or it won't break at all. I've been looking for photos of trip mechanisms or plows, but I can't seem to find anything that makes sense to me (probably because I don't know what I'm looking for!)

Thanks for the help so far, and for taking the time to answer my posts.
Darren

MY GRANDPA OWN A JD LA THEN PURCHASED A JD 40S BECAUSE THE FRONT AND REAR LIFT WAS TOO MUCH TO HANDLE DUE TO THE SPRING ASSIST LIFT. HE BOUGHT THE 40S BECAUSE IT HAD A HYDRAULIC LIFT. ALL THIS NOW BELONGS TO ME. I NEVER SAW THE LA OPERATE AND IT HAS BEEN SOLD. BUT I DID KEEP ALL THE CULTIVATING EQUIPEMENT. I HAVE SOME PLOW FEET THAT ARE RIGID AND SOME HAVE THE SPRING TRIP MECHANISM. SOME OF MINE HAVE BUSTED AND I AM ALSO LOOKING AND HAVE FOUND ONLY A FEW. IF YOU ARE LIKE ME AND DON'T HAVE MUCH MONEY, KEEP LOOKING. CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL DEALERS, BOTH STOCK AND AFTER MARKET AND ASK THEM ABOUT OLDER FARMERS IN YOUR AREA THEN HIT THE PHONE. THIS IS HOW I CAME ABOUT SOME OF MY INFORMATION.

Darren, The mounted plow for a John deere LA did not have a trip mechanism, the tractor was light and relatively slow, if the plow hit something hard the tractor would spin or stall, if you are using it on a similar size tractor, just use reasonable speed and know what you are likely to tangle with. An old pull type plow with a release hitch would probably be cheaper and easier than rigging a trip-back on your plow. Just my 2cents worth. Bob

Brouse a couple of scrap yards and see if you can adapt some parts from another plow?
