Hi, y'all.
I'm working on mounting an old JD pull-type plow on my Farmall Super A. If I rig it up without any kind of trip mechanism am I setting myself up for trouble?? Probably sounds like a pretty dumb question, but I'm a novice and trying to use what I have.

Thanks again for all the help,
Darren

Yes and No, I have an old IH trip plow I use behind a 70 hp tractor just because that's what I have. The break away hitch was gone years before I got it. I use 2 clevises ,one with a 3/8" bolt to pull it,so the small bolt will break if it hits a root. Although I have 70 hp or more I still spin out occasionally, probobly due to worn out tires. And have never broke the bolt off.I plow about 20 acres a year and I run pretty fast around 5-6 mph. I have a 560 farmall with a gas engine from an 806 (301 I think)and I plow in 4 th gear. It burns 5-6 gal/hr on a 2/14 plow.It uses the same fuel with a broadcast seeder or disk.

Darren: You should have a trip hitch, just in case. A Super A will usually spin out, but there is always that chance it doesn't. What is going to happen will happen very quickly. When you get the trip hitch then there is the trip rope to worry about. Don't throw it over your leg with a knot on the end of it. The knot will always hit you in the groin area.

You mean a trip to let the plow detach or a bottom to tip up if it hits a large rock?

Something has to give, either the plow or tractor will lift, or something will break. Guess that's up to you.
