This weekend I purchase a bale elevator to help load hay on the flat bed we just finished putting together. I've never used one before but am looking forward to it. I'm just too old to throw those bales on a truck that starts out 4' off the ground. I need to build someway of attaching it to the truck. It appears there is just a simple pin that drops through a hole. Does the mount on the truck need to stand out away from the bed a few inches or is close to the bed better? I would like to keep it from hitting the truck if possible. The 2nd question is the bales themselves. My baler drops the bales (currently) on there edge. It looks to me that the bales should be flat on the ground in order for the chain to better grab the bale. Does it matter? If so I'll need to change the way the bales drop behind the baler. No help from the pervious owner, he passed away. Sorry for the long post.

We'll sure try. I'm going to be out of town for a few days but will get it on as soon as we get back. Hopefully Sunday.

Chief your baler has a 1/4 turn chute on it which is generally for balewagon pick up.
Go to some nearby bone yard or dealer with one and look for a regular(standard) chute for your baler. I'm sure that many different models will fit as the setup is very basic. Good luck with your new pick up..... .

One the ones I've used, there was kind of a "U" shaped clip on an arm that dropped into the stake pocket. The clip was on a pivot on the arm which gave a couple of inches of clearance. Still the loader would rub the side of the bed on occassion.

The bales do need to be flat as Mike said. Other wise the loader tang/spike will just work like a thumb on the pages of a magazine.

It should be easy enough to build a one sided ramp turner just before the bale falls from the baler. If there are only a few bales on edge, the elevator will usually pick them up after pushing them a short distance.

Before we went to round bales, we used one (Kneibhide {sp}) for years. Always just dropped the pin through the stake pocket (bob truck and various trailers). It did rub against the bed and I doubt you can do anything to keep it from doing so(at least when turning), no matter what kind of hitch you put on the truck. I suppose you could make a "bumper" out of tire or inner tube or something..... ..always figured the loader replaced 2-4 men. On ours, the bales needed to lie string-down.....

My next door neighbor has three of them. He uses them on a goose neck trailer. I haven't seen one that was used with a truck. His picks up the bales flat (strings on top and on the ground sides of the bales). Man does it work. Just drive along and it picks up the bales. Wish I could help more with the mounting. I'm sure someone on the board has used them.

Mike--I'm glad you mentioned that. I have 2 gooseneck trailers and obviously can't pull them behind the baler. I have been wondering if one of those elevators would work with a gooseneck, I know where there are a couple of elevators sitting so I might check it out.

I might be able to help a bit here. I just purchased a bale loader last fall and spent quite a bit of time figuring out hook-ups for two different trailers hooked to a pick-up and a 16 foot flat bed truck. I ended up making a swivelling offset tongue to hook to the back of either truck and the front of the loader, and two short attachements for the sides of the loader. One goes to the front and one to the rear over the loader axle. Both attachments are able to move in all directions so they "float". The side point hook-ups keep the loader from dragging into the trailer while the tongue does the pulling. It will move in or out a bit on turns, but it never gets so close that it touches the trailers. I also used the same hook-up system to attach it directly to the side of the flatbed truck. I just attach the offset tongue to the front under the bed, and hook the other two points to the side. This set-up allows me to use the loader with either truck pulling either trailer, or with the flatbed truck alone. Hope I've explained this well enough for it to make sense. Took some trial and error, but it works just fine now. Ron
