NH316 knotter help

I have a mid 1980's NH 316 baler. Every thing works like it should, but for the past three years I have been experiencing a knotter problem. For the most part the baler works great in the field and breaks very few, unless the hay is tougher that it should be. My issue is once the hay is baled, the outside (LH side) string breaks at the base of the knot when you are handling the bales. This is not huge, but very annoying. I have replaced bill hooks, adjusted tension, switched twine suppliers, etc., however there must be something that I am missing. Any insights would be much appreciated!

Make sure you have the reccomended clearance between the billhook and the knife arm. I think steve is right though. Sorry twine will give you fits. If this twine has been wet throw it away. Good luck.

Larry, this problem generally comes from too much tension for the quality of twine you have. If what you are telling us is correct, that the knot is made but the twine breaks at the base of the knot, there are only 2 things you can do to eliminate this problem. 1- buy heavier or higher quality twine or, 2- loosen the bale tension crank handles. Remember, I am diagnosing this assuming the knot is made but the twine breaks at the base of the knot. Steve

Usually this is caused by too much tension on the twine as the billhook is turning. Loosen the twine holder a half of a round at a time or until you get it too loose that the string gets pulled from the twine disc while the bale is being formed. Hope that I explained this so you can understand,if you have any other questions please let me know. HTH

For NHBalerman, Sir I remember you were very helpful when I had questions about a NH 80 baler a couple years ago. Well I have so much fun with that old girl, I've found a model 1282 900 miles away that I'm consideering adding to my small operation. Can you tell me the width /length/ weight of a 1282? Any way to transport other than flat bed truck? Could it be taken apart to load on a pickup pulled trailer? Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks Dick Davis

Are your bails even or "banana" bales? if you get too much hay on one side of the bale that will make a difference, Usually this caused from something nicking the twine. I would look for a rough spot on knotters and also on the front end of the bale chamber in that area.
