I agree my uncle took off the 3rd bottom with a '48A here in our MN clay.

You say an old A so I wiuld guess that it is 46 or older and they are only 2 plow and could not handle even a 2 bottom on 3 point

2-16's is a good combination if you have soils like we have. Dad plowed with a 51 A with a power block all through the 50's and he said the J.D. 2-16's plow worked best with the gear combinations the tractor had. He would go in 2nd or 3rd gear in the fall and 3rd in the spring in corn stalks or bean stubble. Alfalfa was done in creeper (spelled S-L-O-W) gear if the soil was realy dry or second with a little moisture, and third wasn't even thought about. He said he tried 3-14's and the tractor pulled it ok in the spring but it was too much for fall plowing. Three bottoms would have been out of the question in alfalfa. This is with John Deere plows. Other brands of plows might have harder or lighter draft.

It depends on soil type, adjustment of the plow, operator skill etc.... BUT, I would definitely take the extra day or so to plow and use a 2 bottom. What you may make for in area covered per pass with a 3 bottom, you will lose in much slower speed and more likely than not, severe stress on the tractor.

Unless its very good ground or sandy ground I'd go with the 2 bottom

If it was me I would go with the 2-bottom. I pull a 3-bottom with my 47 A and it is a real load for it.
