New Holland 640 Round Baler

I recently bought a NH 640 autowrap baler... I was wondering how a 4WD 62 horsepower john deere would pull it...and what people thought about this baler and if there was any tricks to making a tight bale with it...like having to go slow or can you run pretty good. I know going slow will make a tigher bale but, just wondering how this baler does with a mid range speed.

Your tractor should do all right. For years my dad has run a NH 650 set on 4x5 with a 5600 Ford and it makes a good bale, pulls hard on steep hills and the tracotor may run a little warm. You wont have to worry about going so fast as to damage bale quality, you'll have to gear down some to keep from overheating. These balers have a hydraulic bale tension system and you can control how tight the hay is baled with it. I've got some rolled with my 650 (I liked Dad's so well I got one too) that the cows have to bite it off, cant pull it out. I usually run set at the maximum of the green area.

I don't know much about a NH640, but I have a NH644. I would think that they are somewhat similar. I usually have the hydraulic pressure setting on the baler at 1800PSI. I usually bale grass with 60-70% moisture. It is my understanding that the dryer the hay the less pressure needed. I beleive that my owners manual may have a little more info. If you want I could dig it up.

What do you mean you usally run the maximum of the green area....not really sure what you are talking about. I am just learning about this baler. thanks.
