I found a New Idea No.17 manure spreader today at a short items dealer. He had bought it from an estate sale. It had origional wood with the No.17 painted in front. The paint on the sides was in good shape. I doubt it ever set outside. The floor was perfect. It had a little rusted metal at each end of the spreader slinger shaft. It is ground driven. All the gears and sprokets looked good. Is it worth $600. Will it spread manure with a lot of hay mixed in? I am sure the strings will give it a fit. Has anyone used one of these? What years were they made? THANKS

The number 17 was built from 1955-1960. If the tag on the lower right hand box frame is still there, you can email the lot number and I can tell you the exact year this was built. I fix these up for a hobby and New Ideas are definately my favorite. All the old timers around here say that the New Ideas are the Cadilliac of spreaders. I spread lots of long stemmed hay or straw and they work great. Let me know if I can help you on the year.

I recently pulled a New Idea spreader out of the trees at a neighbor's farm. Wooden bed and sides, steel wheels, and looks like the tractor tongue is newer than the machine. Very little left except the metal parts. Plate states "Lot 521". Model? Year? Color? The owners would appreciate any info.

Thanks to all for the reply. It is newer than I was thinking than. I may go look at it again when it warms up a bit more. Supposed to hit 40 tomorrow after some low 10's. The chill factor was about 0 when I looked at it the other day. I don't need one a lot as I feed in the pasture, but sure would be good to use occasionally.

New Idea made a very good manure spreader so I'm sure yours will work well. In most area a small spreader in good condition will bring very good money so I'm not surprised at the $600.

I live in se PA and $600 is a very very good deal if the spreader is in good shape. They often bring $1000 for a good used one, and near $2000 for a rebuilt one. we recectly paid $900 to have ours rebuilt. it works very well and has spread everything we have put in it so far, straw, pen-packed manure, etc. Strings are rough on it though.
