I have an opportunity to get an old #46 MCCormick square baler. I know the man who owns it now and I know it has been shedded for approximately 20 years. It hasn't baled any hay in that time. I also know that it had only one previous owner who maintained the baler extremely well. The baler looks to be in great shape. However, the man advised me that it will tie only on one side of the bale and not the other. I know absolutely nothing about working on knotters. What could be wrong? Are there still parts available for this machine(knotters)? How expensive would new knotters be if that is what is needed. Help!!
I can get the baler for free. I just don't want to drag it home if I can't get some use out of it. I've got too much junk already! Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Devin

There are bearing followers on each knotter, they are behind a nut and spring, try tighting the nut a little. If it still doesn't tie you may need to replace the follower. They are about $75 to $100 for a pair available from CaseIH dealer. These are an excellent baler and they have a gear driven knotter not chain driven like the New Holland which can go out of time.

Can any one tell me how to thread the twine on a McCormick 46 baler. Or at least the knotter.

Also check for up-down movement on the plunger, if the slides are worn it will cause what you describe, had one from about 77-81 when quit dairying, when we bought it it had had a total whole new plunger put in because of that problem, you will find the same thing with any bake or model baler of any age

Rick,
Where is the model located you are referring to. I might be interested if it is close to the western KY area. Thanks
Devin

Needs twine knifes shapened and adjusted . You will need to remove twine knifes and put small washers behind them to make it cut twine quicker. Will take some tinkering to get it right but will work. Also the twine bill are probaly wornen out and need replaced. They can be gotten at csae ih dealer but are pricy. May just need cleaned up real good. And don,t run this baler to fast no more than 20 to 25 strokes per minute run to fast and it won,t tie. Ground speed depends on the amount of hay you are feeding it. They make as nice a bale as any baler out there. Also check hay dog springs there are 4 of them and if broken need to be replaced. Can buy a spring at local hardware store for this purpose. Check spring on plunger stop also. After setting all this time it could have some things froze up. Sounds as if the price is right. All the best to you and yours.
