Haybine recomendations?

I have about 40 acres of hay to cut this summer. I have an old NH 488 but it is worn out and not worth fixing. I am looking for a new haybine for around $1000, less would be nice. I don't think for that amount i can get a decent 488 even though i really liked the old one. What kind of haybines could i get for this amount that would give good service? There are two New Idea 290's near by that could be had much cheaper. Were they any good? Thanks for any suggestions.

Here you are luck to get $500 for a good NH 474 in very good condition. Everybody wants a disc mower.

Josh, for 40 acres do yourself a favor and find a good used Hesston if you can. One with the steel roll that does not use crimping action but rather skins the material going through to allow quicker drying since the rolls rotate at different speeds. These don't require near as much maintance and will run forever and will do the job you want. You should be able to pick up an 8 or 9 footer for less than a thousand. Good luck.....

They are old. The NI 290 was also sold as the MF 91 haytender and the Ford 535. There were some of each flavor around here. They do not use a wobble drive like New Holland. They also do not have rubber covered rollers. There is at least one 290 and one 91 still cutting hay near me. The NI 290 that is still running has been on the same farm since it was new around 1971. I don't know about parts availability, but if you can find a pair of them for under $1000, I wouldn't be afraid of them.

Nothin around here. Any brand, in any kind of workin condition 1500+. Add at least grand (or more) for NH or JD. Wouldn't know about the NI's but if you got both it may be worth it.

Around here, any assortment of Hesstons, NH 469's, and the occasional NH 479. I don't seem to see a lot of NI haybines around here. These are just the models I see a lot.
