If we still haven't found a thresher by this summer, we would still like to bind and shock some oats. I have a AC big bin 66 and i'm wondering if it would work to pitch the bundles through it?? The only problem i can think of is that we would have to cut the twine on the bundles ourselves. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Brandon

It will work. Had a buddy that wanted to go back into yesteryear and bought a binder to cut grain. He shocked about 5 acres and had his fill of fun. We used my dad's JD 30 combine and it worked fine. Tried by running to shocks and cut and feed bundles, but then he wanted a straw stack so used a long hopper blower and parked the combine over that. He got his stack. People thought he was a little nuts though. He bought a Thresher this year.

On rare occassions we would sometimes "top" bundles of feed to use as seed.

We would raise the combine platform up as high as it would go, then just bring the top of the bundle into the cutter bar. Only the tops of the bundles would be run through the machine saving the bundle, still tied, to be fed later.

Sigh! How I miss bound feed, shocking, the look of shocks in the fields, etc. A great feed is you didn't weaken from all of the work.

It would certainly work, but with any combine or thresher, uniform feeding of a proper amount is important to get a decent job of threshing done. I would suggest, in order to accomplish that and be safe (?), that you construct a sheetmetal platform to mount on the header. A flat portion on which to cut the bundles, and a slant portion to let the crop slide onto the canvas.

And be careful. Lots of spinning wirling parts to get your parts caught into. Kids are where?

I have seen it done before. The bundles must be cut by hand. It would help to take the reel off the combine so you had an easier throw onto the canvas. One possibility is to put a baler right at the end of the combine to bale the straw as it comes out.

It could be done. I think you would have to be careful feeding the bundles into it so you would not have a slug go into it. As for the straw build up I would think you could pull the combine up a few feet once in a while as the straw builds up. I do not think I would want to do very much this way though.

You will be cutting and feeding bundles in the one end and how are you getting the chaff and straw away from the tail end? My dad had a BIG Case pull type combine and one year we pitched seed alfalfa into it. He would back it up to a cutbank and let the tailings drop that way. It was too wet to pull it through the fields that fall.

Tight-bottom double chain elevator would also work.
