I have a chance to get a JD #5 mower, but I'm looking for information on hooking it to the three point on my Ford. Is this possible, practical, a good idea?

Thanks for any help.

Depends on the version of the mower, If it is one of the older styles without the quick hitch just use the stay straps to the cross drawbar and put the V PTO shaft adapter on bolted below the cross drawbar and put your sway bars on, then just 2 bolts through the mower hitch and cross drawbar, less work than a 3 point hitch and your tractor should have the remote cylinder hookup on it allready that is independant of the 3 point lift arms, newer version would take a bit more work

Thanks guys. It sounds like a little too much of a project. I'll keep looking for a 3-point specific mower.

Yes it is possible. We used one for YEARS behind a MF30. There were these solid arms that hooked into the 3rd point on the tractor and kept the drag links stationary, (of course we didn't use the lift links at all). Then we ran a steel cable to pick up the cutter bar through a couple of pullys up to the right lift arm, this provided the lift.
There was a draw bar on the drag links that we hooked the #5 to with 4 bolts through two pieces of angle iron attached to another angle iron on the mower.
We used this set up for over 20 years on 120 acres until we decided to "upgrade" to a new MF model. We never got the same performance or satisfaction out of that or any of the 4 other "new" ones we tried. I'd LOVE to get my hands on another #5. ~Walk in peace~

I have an assortment of JD #5 mowers about the place as I like them for cutting my hay. You'll just have to take my word for it, you need to look at a newer model made for 3 pt. I move mine around sometimes with a small Ford that has a 3 pt and they just don't handle well on this setup.
The #5 CAN be adapted to almost any tractor, but doing so can cost more than the original mower and why do it if there are slightly newer 3pt models around. The #5 works best, IMHO, when it has the quick attachment arms on it and is hooked to a firm and stable old style drawbar or a JD tractor with the correct brackets. You didn't say what model Ford you have, but Ford made some great sickles. Watch, though, because older sickles sometimes have clamps for the 3 pt lift arms and they don't always fit real well on the newer Ford tractors. Also, watch for scammers. A good restorable #5 should not go over $100. The most I have paid was $60. JD parts are costly and they all need something.

Sorry...I see you have the 860 listed in your description. Don't know it so I won't comment.

If you can find a parts manual for a # 5 mower it will show mounts for almost any tractor built including some crawlers.

Brian,

Here's a link for hooking up a JD #5 mower. I do have one but it goes on my IH M. I have heard of people putting the lower link pins on the mower and hooking up just the lower link. This is probably the simplest way to do it. The #5 is a great mower, I mow 20 acres of grass hay every year and have never had a problem. I paid $50 for is on the consignment lot of a JD dealer.

I'm sure it can be done but if you hook it to the 3 point arms you have no way to lift the bar unless you have a separage remote valve or want to use a hand lever. I have a number 5 and a number 8 that I really like but they are on JD tractors set up for them. I would agree that there are lots of 3 point mowers out there that would probably work better on your ford.

My Grandfather had a #5 and used it on an 801 Ford. The mower book showed different hitch options for different tractors, this one just hooked to the lift arms, no top link. You could probably make it fit pretty easy. Might want to look at old Ford mowers, they may work better with a Ford tractor.
