Are you referring to a 2-stage snowthrower, or a single stage with one large fanwheel? Referring to 2-stage blowers that I am familiar with, in the 6', 7' or 8' sizes, typically the blower wheel is in the 24" to 30" range, and is driven by a straight-through shaft that passes through the 90 degree gearbox that supplies power to the sideshaft that drives the auger(s), so the fanwheel turns at 540 RPM's along with the PTO shaft. In similar models set up for 1000 RPM PTO's, there is normally a gear reduction ahead of the fan to reduce to 1000 RPM PTO speed, I suppose to about the 540 RPM's the other models use. Your 5' snowblower may have a smaller wheel, and need to run at more than 540 RPM's for the fanwheel to have enough peripheral speed to throw the snow a reasonable distance. What is the diameter of your blower wheel? Could the blower have originally been sold for a compact tractor with a non-standard PTO speed? Possibly, also, if the blower has sat for a while, and rusted, it will not work as well as when the rust is polished off through use.
