Woods batwing percaution

Hello, Was mowing stalks today , taking advantage of the finally frozen ground here. Pullling a 15' Woods Batwing with my 656 Farmall when suddenly got knocked in the head by a big bolt. About knocked my head into the steering wheel. Anyway the 5/8" x 11" bolt that holds the big coil spring had rusted in half down at the lower end and broken and came right up to the operator area. The spring itself hit the fender on the tractor fairly hard.I considered myself lucky. The whole wheel mounting asembly has to be removed to replace the bolt. I went ahead and pulled the other side as well and it was nearly ready to go as well. It is a rough job geting the assembly off. Requires a torch and a strong 3/4" drive 1 1/8" socket.You all who mow with these with open station tractors may want to check those two bolts as they are definitely prone to rust and becoming projectiles. Seems dirt and chaff gather and stay around the base of the bolt causing it to rust. I intend to replace mine with Grade 8 bolts. Good Luck. YC

YC , Sorry to hear about your mishap, glad you made it home for supper, after you think about those close calls, it really scares the heebeegeebees out of a guy....maybe you should contact the manufacturer with your story passing along concern for safety sake. We have only had strikes from corn cobs and small rocks with our little Shultz flail chopper, Thanks for sharing your story, maybe get a sheild out of a scrap lexan sheet, check out you local glass shops.Next time it may not be the bolt you fixed....could be a rock,stick of wood,even a corn cob could send you to the ho$pital...best regards, doug
