Each spring I add a couple of acres to a plot of prairie grass that I started 3 years ago. Each year I have used one or the other of two special no till drills that are available around here for rent that have the proper grain box agitators to handle this fluffy native grass seed. Both of these drills are a piece of work (editing done here), offering little in precise seed metering.

Last summer I bought a John Deere FB-B grain drill to put in a little wheat. I thought I was familiar with this machine, having had one as a kid. I was surprised in reading the owners manual to learn that there was an extra cost seed attachment offered for Brome grass, Orchard grass, Buffalo Grass and the like. It mounts behind and below the regular grass seeder and has an internal agitator.

Does anyone have or has anyone ever used one of these attachments? How well do they work? Would they go a creditable job with native grasses such as the Blue Stems and Indian grass? Anybody have one theyd care to let go of?

Guys---

Thanks for the replies but what I'm referring to is NOT the regular grass seeder found on almost all FB-B's. This is a seeder box mounted at the rear of the drill and half-way between the small grass seeder and the step board. It has a horizontal agitator in it to keep "fluffy" seed mixtures moving toward the bottom.

I was curious as to whether anyone had ever tried to use one of these attachments on Big Blue Stem, Little Blue Stem or the like. These native varieties represent the extreme fluffies and are often drilled with special drills with agitators already built in the seed box. To describe the seed of Blue Stem or Indian Grass, it is, in no way, like alfalfa or clover. It is more like milk weed or thistle. You must keep it agitated or it will just sit there, suspended in the taper of the grain box.

Thanks again.

I have an FBB with the grass seeder I would sell. We planted alfalfa with the small seeds box and it worked good. Shoot an email to sweetcorn70(at)hotmail.com if your interested. It is kinda rusty, but the small seeds box and all associated parts are pretty good. The one casting has a crack but it doesn't affect operation. I can get pics if needed. I am in Ohio.

When we sow brome , we just add the brome in with the seed oats or barley and mix well. This has always worked well for us.
