JD 44 plow side draft

I have a John Deere model 44 plow (2-16) that I have been using for the past 10 years or so. Last season it seemed like it pulled at an angle i.e. not straight behind the tractor. I have set it up by the book and tried to get the hitch adjusted to get the center of draft parallel to the center of the tractor. It does not seem to make a lot of difference. The shares are only a few years old and the heels on the landsides are a little worn.

Any ideas why it pulls crooked ?

The centerline of draft of any plow is 1/4 bottom width to the left of center of the plow. (Assuming that the plow throws the furrow to the right). That line of draft is where the centerline of the plow hitch should be. The right rear wheel of the tractor should be adjusted to the right of the centerline of the tractor so that the left side of tire just hugs the furrow wall.

This also assumes that the plowshares and landsides are in at least like new condition, rather than extremely worn, which would affect how the plow operates. Also, in extremely heavy ground, the plow has a tendency to pull to the left because sidedraft can change in the course of the field.

Is this a Pull-type plow..????

I know that our 2x14" pull-types are off-set to the rt., and the drawbar is 1 hole to the right.. and the inside of the tire is about 27" from the center of the tractor... Centering the plow may not be what you want...as long as you are cutting 16", I guess you are ok, there....

Greg, J D at one time offered a attchment called a root cutter. It was a L shaped piece that when bolted to the landside, was a 4" blade that cut into the furrow wall. It really straightened the 44 plow out. Don't know where you would find one now. Might try J D.
