I have located a 1989 model 316 baler. Anybody have any experience with one of these? I am used to running a 570 and also a 336 Deere for a friend of mine. Looking for a baler of my own. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info guys. I am going to look at this baler tomorrow. Good balers in this area are hard to find, people just let them sit out all the time and don't take care of them. The dealer said this one was never left outside until they got it in on trade. It ought to be a good baler unless it is just wore out.

Rob, this is one of New Holland's all time best balers. I'd take a 316 over a 570 anyday. The 570 will probably out bale the 316, but not by too much. But the 316 baler was one of the best for not giving trouble. The 570 has been one of the worst. If your 570 has been trouble free, that is great. But I will assure you that many 570's have been cussed out over the past 13 years. Steve

Steve, People tell me the 488 haybine is easier to keep up than the 489 because of the main gearbox problems on the 489. I have operated both of these units, and can't tell any difference in the way they cut. I can buy either one right now, and am leaning toward the 488. Do you agree?

Rob, my answer won't be very popular among New Holland employees and fellow dealers, but I absolutely agree with you. I have worked with both units for more years then I care to remember and I would rather have a 488 any day over a 489. Most New Holland people feel the 489 was the greatest thing since sliced bread and butter, but anyone who feels that way did not spend years servicing that model. It is the worst machine to work on that New Holland ever made. Yes, I will admit that the seperate floating cutterhead is nice, but not nice enough for me to ever own one. Both machines have the same cutterbar setup, so they both cut the same. So, as you can tell, the 488 is the machine for me. Steve

I have a 316 that I bought new and it has been
an excellent baler. I've used two different 336
Deeres and the 316 runs circles around them. I
think you'll be pleased with the extra wide Super Sweep feature as well.

We have a used 316 we purchased to replace our 268. The 316 has hydraformic bale tension and a #70 thrower. Baler has proved to be very reliable using both plastic and sisal 9000'twine to produce 50lb. bales for the horse market. As with any equipment, routine maintenence is essential.
