I think you're getting a deal at $1000 (especially from a dealer). I literally just bought a 479 myself after searching every state within 300 miles. I paid $1500 for mine with some smooth talking, from a private individual and that came with an extra knife and a manual. I think the suggestion to have it hooked up to a tractor is the best bet. That's what I did to confirm everything was doing what it was supposed to and nothing it wasn't supposed to do. There are a couple of things to check especially; make sure the rubber on the rollers hasnt started to delaminate in chunks, and make sure the reel drive isnt grinding, and of course as previously noted check the wobble box, and just visibly (but carefully) watch everything go round and round and back and forth. If all looks reasonably decent, I'd snag it. New Holland makes good hay equipment. Period.

I have a 469 and 489 for sale if that would help. Have some other machines also. Rick

Yes it needs a cylinder to raise. You sem to have pretty well listed what you need to look for. I think the main thing would be the wobble or gear box if it seems to have slop in it I would walk away. I have never bought one but hear they are high dollar. For a thousand dollars I think the cylinde should be included and since he seems to imply it is field ready at that price he should be willing to make some kind of agreement as to what you can expect in the way of a warranty of some kind I know it wouldn't be much but he should be willing to stand benind his word. A lot of almost worn out machines can cut hay. Just my thoughts which may or may not be good advice since I ain't charging nothing for it there is no warranty implied or otherwise.

I have a 469 which is its just older brother and have had a 488 which came after the 479. They are good cutting machines. Yes they do use a cylinder 3x8 is what mine has on it. You will want to get some depth stops to put on the cylinder rod to set the depth you will want to stay with. Check for play n the gearbox, wobble box and the roller bearings. If possible have the dealer hook it up to a tractor and listen too it run and watch everything on it. The 479 will have the big sickle head with a bolt holding it in adn thats a good thing, I modified a 488 sickle head to use on my 469 to be able to do this, worked good. Look the tongue over good to make sure its not cracked, they put a thin piece of square tubing on them in my opinion, I have had 3 haybines and have only broke one. It will be pretty much self explanitory to what to look for if you can see it under power at the dealer. Hope this helps.
Gary

These machines should not use a depth stop on a standard 8" stroke cylinder. Set the cuting height with the skid shoes, and flotation with the spring tension. Lower the cylinder fully. Running the machine on the cylinder will twist the mainframe tube between the header mounts over time.

Well, I've got countless hours mowing with them this way and never had a minutes problem out of them! Got a lot of acres mowed with them too. I'm not saying that there couldn't be a problem and I know the skid shoes are there for the purpose of skidding on the ground. Main reason why people tear their machines up is they are running them like maniacs and not knowing what they are doing.

I figured you would come back with a response like that, and I'm not gonna argue if that works for you. I wanted to get a potential new operator to run his the way NH intended, that's all.
