I am considering purchasing a JD 7000 planter and I need some pointers. What specific things should I look for in this planter so that I don't buy a piece of junk? I am looking for a dry fertilizer no-till planter.

Any help is much appreciated.

Greg H.

I bought a five year old 7000-8/30 and used it for 22 years, 350-400 acres per year. During that time I replaced the openers once, both seed and fertilizer. Replaced the clutch once, rebuilt the main lift cylinder once, marker cable once, built a new fertilizer auger tube once. Rebored gauge wheel arms for bushings- would buy new next time since the bushings did not allow grease storage area so they froze up quicker. Replaced some bearings and gauge wheels. Made fertilizer drop tubes out of stainless milk pipeline- end of rusting .Pressure washed after each season- thorough cleaning, especially fertilizer areas, is essential. 7000 is a very good machine- that's why all current planter technology is a copycat when it comes to seed placement systems. Air planter has some advantages in seed selection system, but not in placement.

Well, the press wheels get loose & that's a pile of money for 16 new arms. The opening disks wear down.

The finger units need a rebuild every now & then. Pretty much would have to pop them open to find out.

I would urge you to consider Kinze especially with dry fertilizer. Many 8-30 get major cancer on the master hydraulic cylinder as this was one of Deere's poorer designs. The clutch mechanism is troublesome also. I don't know about the smaller planters as they have a different lift system.
