What is the general opinion about converting a JD 7000 Planter from a 36" rows to 30" rows? I have an implement dealer wanting to sell me this 36" row planter and telling me it is easy to convert over to 30" rows. I don't know that I am convinced.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

Greg H.

Just get you a 6row 7000in first place. This way you will have complete monitor on all units etc. By the time you convert the other one the right way you will not have saved anything. He is just trying to get a very unpopular size planter off his lot. I have a 6row 7000 for sale if that would help you $2250.00 cash.

Not much to tell typical 6row planter. I has liquid fert attachments but they need work will basically sell it without and it is good unit. Just don't need anymore. 319-257-6764 for more info. This is actually another farmers unit he ask for me to sell for him.

Not sure on how many row planter you are looking at.

A few years ago I converted a JD 7000 pull type 8 X 36 to a 10 X 30. No welding required. Everything was bolted/clamped to the frame. I did it off and on over the winter months. Only item I needed help with was moving the transport frame. 3 guys and two hours later it was in place.

The entire conversion with adding the 2 extra rows with fertilizer openers (I run liquid starter) was around $1250. Only parts I needed to get new was 4 hyd hoses. The 2 extra units were gotten used for $450 a row.

I do run the two units "unmonitered". But have one on each side. So far after 5 seasons of use, everything still operates perfectly.

Lot less investment than replacing an unusable planter with a spendy 12 row machine. I can still plant close to 100 acres a day if I want to so the sacrifice of 5 feet of planter is a mute issue for my situation.

Much easier on 7000 Conservation than the plain 7000 machines which have the wheel frames welded on a common rockshaft. Still a lot of bullwork. Probably end up replacing a bunch of hardware. I wouldn't think a 7000 4x30 would be that hard to find; unless the 4x36 you are looking at is special. Tell him if it is that easy to change, do it.
