Can anyone give me any info about a JD 1240 planter? Would like to know about when they were built and if they were any good. Thanks. Tim

Bacicaly a 494A plate planter, just about every part would interchange on the plate type, also made as a plateless version. Plate type avaible with either disc or shoe seed or fert openers, avaible seed press wheel, disc or shoe seed covers and rubber or steel press wheels

I have a 1240 and have used it for two seasons.
It is a plateless and I plant popcorn and soys.
The first season the popcorn seed was larger than last year. The smaller kernels did not plant evenly. Had big spaces in some rows. Will plant the larger seeds this season to see if it is the planter or the soil conditions or seed.
I built my own marker system, Farm Show, Vol. 27, No. 5, 2003, page 16. The old JD systems was a big pain in the ... Overall the planter works about average for its age of 25-30 years. Mine is a very experienced unit and I've replaced many of the opener bearings, etc. It is a shoe opener and has been well oiled after usage and been shedded.
No rust.
I'd buy another if the price was right.
Good Luck,

If you are looking for a planter You would be far better to get the 7000 Jd series. Much better depth and seed control period. You can get them pretty cheap as they are now even outdated. Personally I like The IH air planters over the Deeres. I have a 12row horizontal fold unit for sale now if interested. Slick unit, just quit rowcrop farming.

The 1240 planter was made I believe in the early to mid 70's. They were available in either a plated model or a plateless. Years ago we had a plateless that worked perfect. Thought we would'nt plant anymore corn so we sold it. Big mistake. Two years ago I purchased a 1240 plated planter at an auction. It also does a very good job. If I remember right the plateless planter had a disc opener for the seed drop while my plate planter that I have now has a runner. Some of the 1240 planters had rubber closing wheels while some have the metal closing wheels. I like the planter that I have now the only thing that I have noticed if you try to plant as you go around the corner of a field sometimes the cover wheels don't cover the seed as they get off the seed trench. But I think that happens with all planters as I have a neighbor with an IH 56 and his does the same.
