GIVE ME YOUR BEST ADVICE ON THESE TWO HAY RAKES (SIDE DELIVERY) AS I AM LOOKING AT UP GRADING I KNOW JD MADE SEVERAL MODELS. ALSO OLIVER RAKES AND THE ONES WITH THE TRI SICKLE FRONT END VICE DRAW BAR TYPE?

I'll tell my almost two-cents worth. First we're situated upon rolling ground. Wheel rakes change hands around here faster than the seasons. For first cutting grass any beatable old hay rake'll do. The most poplular and perhaps durable are the 258 NH's. If they eren't there, add grease fittings to the reel-bar ends and the machines'll last near forever. There are a few NH inverters about here for the alphalfa, but some of them are gathering dust in to many sheds. They suposedly plug to easy. I'm not crazy about it myself. its slower, but does a good job on alphafa. My personal favorite is my old pto driven two speed reversable tedding oppioned AC. It isn't any faster than the inverter but I like to listen to it working when I'm doing my alphafa. I guess it's all to what you're going to do with it; and, to each his own. Have fun. I am, over the same two/three hundred acres once/twice/three times a year.

Do you really want to make hay or make rope? If you want to make rope buy any side delivery or wheel rake, but if you want to make good dry hay then buy a rotary rake. I've had all three types and when it comes to making good dry hay a rotary is vastly superior. The best rotsry rake to me is a Kuhn ar a Deutz.

new holland without a doubt,they look similar but in my experience new holland outperforms john deer.wheel rakes and rotory rakes are fine and have thier place but i will always keep a new holland 5 bar horizontal bar rake

my personal favorite is the IH 16 but i cant find another. NH 256 isn't a bad rake but just doesnt turn well on my preferred raking tractors.

256 is a good rake but a 258 or 260 is a foot wider and has double bearings on the bars

I have some from other fellows who want to sell them. one is 258 NH dolly nice and the other one is 256NH with homeade dolly.let me know if that would help. Personally on all my acres I use inline wheel rake. In fact thats what the two fellows who asked to sell above rakes went to.

New Holland would be by far you best buy. Parts are reasonable or more reasonable than most and the best part is that you probably won't need too many parts if any. Resale is better and they are just a plain good rake as is a lot of their haying equipment.

At the risk of offending someone I'd have to say that the NH 256 set the gold standard many years ago. Havent seen anything I liked better. I bought a new one in 1998 (to celebrate the fact that the farm was paid off, had a LITTLE cash in the bank, and I was sick and tired of farming with junk). I got the dolly wheels on the front. My dad has a 256 that he bough well used in 1984 and made a dolly wheel assembly for it in '95. Woundn't do without one now. Last year I got a NH 56 at a sale, almost exactly the same rake (most parts interchange) and first thing I did was make a dolly wheel assembly and a tandem hitch so I can pull the 256. In '98 I could have bought any rake I wanted and the 256 was my choice then and would be now.

I'm in complete agreement. An apparently, so is most everyone else. When a New Holland rake sells at an auction, they get quite a price usually. They are simple, work well, hold up good, and easy to get parts for, should you need parts. John
