When were the 494's made & When & model number did they change from plates? Thanx, Irv

I think John Deere started with the 494 in 1957 or 58. The 1240 was the first planter with figer pickup (plateless) in 1969 or 70

But not all 1240s are plateless, either. Finger pickup was an option. Deere made plate-type #71 unit planters for toolbar mounting until last year.

I think my 7000 manual mentions a plate option for them, as well. Didn't realize the 71's were still in production that long!

Paul, you are right- the 7000 did have the plate option, although most were plateless. Was looking for a 6-30 last year, answered an ad from the jockey in Cokato, turned out to be a plate planter- no wonder the price was $1700!
