I have a New Holland Machinery price list (1959) shows the baler and the price for the twine tie baler is $5975.00 wire-tie at $6112.75, speeds from 1.3 to 23 mph bale lenth from 12" to 52 inchs, Has anyone ever seen or used one? Iam wondering if this machine was used for custom baleing otherwise how could justify the cost of the machine

Theres a self propelled NW baler for sale on ebay right now. Here's your chance! If I can get it to send, I'll put a picture in the implement photos.

I have never operated a NH self propelled baler, there are a number of Freeman 3 tie self propelled balers in our area and I ran one one summer. Great to operate as you are right above the pickup and can see what is going on. You are also close to knotters so know right away when there is a problem. They are also easy to maneuver in the field and to move around dropped bales to rebale broken ones. The one I operated had a cab with air. Some of the Freeman self propelled balers here have been fitted with JD swather cabs. An expensive machine but guys put up a lot of hay here every year and comfort is good too. Down side is you have an engine comparable to a mid size tractor tied up year around.

If this works, you should see a picture of my 1280 Haycruiser. Its a 1962. The one you are talking about would be a model 178. It looks alot like the 1280. If the picture don't come up. Over in the left hand column, click on Implement Photos, then at the bottom of that page where it says Serch for____ Type in 1280 and it will take you to it.

I put mine in the Implement Photos first. Just click on the Implement Photos and at the top of the page you will find "Add Your Photo" just click on that and follow the instuctions. Once you get it there. I can tell you how to get it here. Or you can try this link at the bottom of this post (if it shows up). I've never used it, but its supposed to work.

And a face mask - If they had come out a few years later with a cab & air conditioning..... When you bale, look where the dustiest spot is around the baler..... ;)

Yea, it would be fun to see/ have. I've never seen one, only became aware of them when they were mentioned on ytmag here a few years ago.

I saw a self propelled NH baler at an auction once. I don't know if it's the same one you're reading about....probably not. It looked newer than a 1959. I suppose the salesman's pitch would include the fact that you don't need to buy a tractor to pull it. On the other hand, you couldn't use the self propelled baler to plow a field either, so you'd still have to own a tractor, too.

The one I saw had an enclosed cab, but I understand they didn't all have cabs. You're right, sounds like no fun!
