Terminology - What is a lay off plow

I always thought lay off was the to lay out a field for plowing and that is the amount of land you open up, cultivate or disk before moving to another land. I just assumed it to be process and not a tool.

Fella up the road a bit has single and double layoff plow for sale. Single point hitch. I am thinking he means bottoms and that it would fit a Farmall 140.

The "lay off plow" is the plow which you make your furrows in which to plant. The "lay off plow" can either be a complete implement set up for nothing else or it can be the "shovel" that you put on the implement for "laying off". Then, after you've planted, cultivated, fertilized your crop and before it's ready to start bearing you give it another shot of fertilizer and LAY IT BY!LOL

Around here they use the term lay off for the one sided sweeps used next to the row when cultivating. They "lay off" the soil that would otherwise get on the plants.

My dad (born in 1885) always called a plow made for making rows for hand planting a LAYING OFF PLOW.
