I am looking for a 4 x 16 plow that would be used with a JD 4010 or Oliver 1850. What make and model would you recommend?

We're useing 90hp tractors in varied shades of gren. The oliver 5-16 have been doing their job, espeacialy in our plow busting rocky ground. Can't see a JD1450 much good to us. Might add, between all three of our oliver plows the're configured with all sorts of sod and brush cutters. They all worked fine. What loaded us up was an occasional collection of sumack (spelling?) caught cleaning back or cleaning out fence or tree lines. Remember, once you get them plow shares polished grease'em for winter lay-overs. Good luck.

I would have to say that Oliver,White, Ford, and Case are the only way to go. They are all the same plow so it really doesn't matter which one you want. I plow with a White 598 4-18". Can't plug it no matter what, stays in ground good, pulls easy, leaves field nice and smooth, when you hit a rock it resets extremly hard , so you know that it will be back in the ground right away. I have nothing but good to say about these plows, parts are easy to find too.

Case "EX" series plows are not Olivers . . . and they pull real hard. Only 1975+ Case plows are Oliver/Whites. Pre-1981 Ford plows are also not White/Oliver.

I have a JD145 and can't buy aftermarket moldboards for it, the only place I can buy moldboards is from deere at $175/moldboard, but I can buy all the 4 bottom plows I want at auctions for $50 a pop, go figure. guess this plow is going to be one for the scrap heap

You must have something really odd, I see 145 bottoms listed all the time, Shoup, etc.? What frog do you have???

What oddball bottom is on it? something special? Wiese makes moldboards that fit the F145, and these are what places like TSC, Shoup, Sloan, etc. sell.

I completely re-steeled a JD 145 in a 4-14 with boards, shins, shares, sides and covers out of Shoups catalog.

Prices were cheap and quality is good.

Can't go wrong with an IH plow. Work well in a variety of conditions. For throwing sod up the hill & keeping it there on these old PA hills, you admired the red plow. Their real strong point though was that after the plowing was finished, much less effort was needed to get the field in order to plant.

I would agree with Paul that the Oliver plows did about the best job of plowing in most conditions. It was said the IHC plows were faster, but in the heavier soil conditions here in upstate NY I used an Oliver 1750 pulling 5x16 semi-mount hydraulic reset with excellent results. Speed was about two acres per hour, in 2nd gear, direct or overdrive with the hydraul shift. Had good sucess in corn stalks or stubble, and sod.

I've used a semi mount 5x16 JD 145, 6x16 JD 1450 and owned a 3pt mounted 4x16 JD 125. I now have a semi mount 5x18 IH 720 which is easier to pull and is nearly impossible to plug up. The JD pulls hard, plugs easily, and won't turn to the left (semi mount) Most of my equipment is green but not my plow.

I like the MF Model 174 plows, with either the shear bolt setup or the trip-beam setup. You can get Parts Manaul and an Operator Manual from your MF dealer. Widely sold and used model. Very good design.

What are you going to plow? Heavy cornstalk or other high-trash crops? Or do you plan to chop & disk first, or otherwise not have mucg plant growth to ever plow under?

If dealing with stalks, get the biggest high-clearance plow you can find - an International 720 or Oliver 88 series or similar - can't remember model #s on JD. These will cost some money.

For no-trash conditions, a JD 145 (or a 1450 is almost the same, just newer iron) model would be what your 4010 would have come with if that is important & is a pretty good plow, or any of the Oliver-based plows are very good & pull/turn a little better than other models. Oliver/White supplied plow bottoms for some other companies as well as their own brand.

Around here, Oliver used to be the premium plow.

I have both White 488 and IH 720. White throws a better furrow, stays in the ground better. IH likes to get stalks under the front bottom after tripping and doesn't immediately go back into the ground. Leaves the field rougher for that reason. IH has more cast parts, expensive to replace or wait to get welded. After 22 years, that cast is getting tired. White has steel standards, etc. and I can repair anything on it myself. Clearance is similar, both are good plows, but my choice would be the White. If you look at White- look for the extended frog- better support for the moldboard. I've made extensions for mine out of half-inch plate.

I agree with paul, the white, case, oliver plow is hard to beat.

I've got a MM (White) 4 X 16 semi mount circa about 1968. One of the best ones I've used to plow with.

One thing not many realize, mine has the curved rippled coulters. Did a lot better job with those than the straight ripples we had on another MM plow same type. Still had plugging problems in heavy stalks that were just disked. Shouldn't be a problem if they are chopped first tho.

Curved & rippled???? Wow - didn't know they came rippled. Can you find replacements? These are like a disk blade, toss the trash over & under a bit before the bottom hits it.

Dad bought a hulk of a JD145 to rebuild the 145 we had. It had those cupped blades on it, but of course, since it was not something dad ever had used before, he took them apart for the trash heap, since they would have needed a couple of new bearing & obviously wouldn't have worked anyhow..... Dad was a piece of work. Sigh. I managed to rescue parts enough for 1 from the heap a few years later, and boy that 1 bottom worked well..... Sigh.

Oh well, got a IH 720 now. :)
