Howse 10' shredder...

I know the smaller Howse shredders have a so-so reputation, but I was wondering if any of ya'll have had any actual experience with the larger 10' pull Howse model HD-10D/C? Weight wise it is roughly halfway between the comparable Bush Hog, Rhino, and Woods models (2200 lbs). Gearboxes are also between the smaller Bush Hog (80/55) and the larger Rhino (120/100) at 100/80. So, seems heavy built enough and the gearboxes are plenty good. Price is much less than any competitor-about $1500. So, why shouldn't I go ahead with it? Any experiences with this particular machine that say I shouldn't? Thank you...

We've owned a Howse 10' cutter for about 10 years and wouldn't have another if it was free! If you do more than about 10 acres annually, the parts cost will more than offset any up-front savings. You will use a lot of parts, and they are outrageously priced, and will not interchange with anything. Ours sits in the weeds rusting, we finally bought a second hand Woods that is doing a great job. The Howse we have is not for sale; we wouldn't wish it on anyone! We did try to get the situation resolved with Howse, the mower went back to the factory twice for repairs but was never any better. Sorry for the rant, but I had to get it off my chest! Lest I forget, our dealer was as good as gold, it was the manufacturer we couldn't get satisfaction from.

That is strange! I mow about 80 - 100 acres of pasture with mine annually. Did burn out slip clutch discs pulling it in heavy Johnson Grass with a 986. Delaler had rhw discs and on one occasion i damaged the push pins in the PTO coupler by driving down a steep bank by railroad tracks, I feel that both problems were operator error. Have heard that some later oned had cast iron gears rather than the steel cut gears. I do not know which I have.

I have had one for about 10 years one and am well pleased with it. Only problems i had were that i had to make some modifications from the start. The shields had to have another hole cut to make it fit and the shie;ds rattled until i made some washers from rubber to place under the clips. The hydraulic cylinder was set up one way and i had to add another hose. I did pull with a 986 IHC and now pull with a Farmall M. I am more careful what I run ove rwith my tractor than I am with the cutter. I have cit trees as big as my wrist with bo trouble. It does not turn as short as a more costly machine having 3 universal joints. I would buy again
