Hey guys, got a 1508 John Deere flex wing mower with a leaky bottom seal on one of the wing gearboxes. I've pounded and pounded, used the blue tipped wrench, pounded some more, soaked in PB Blaster and WD by pouring in the gearbox and letting it run down.
Anybody got any other suggestions or know any tricks? I may wind up just tearing the whole gearbox down and dropping it out the bottom? I'd like to not have to do that but it is a last resort. Thanks in advance!

Update!!!!!
Stump jumper is on the ground!!!!! !!!!! !
Thanks to a chain, a 6 ton bottle jack, and the blue tip wrench! I am a happy camper right now. I'll put the new seal in tommorrow and when my help gets here the stump jumper will go back on, with lots of anti seize on it. I really don't think it was rust holdin it on though. It has a combination spine and taper spline on the out put shaft of the gear box. Its built like a brick out house for sure. Plenty heavy duty. Thanks to all for the advice and especially those who suggested the jack and chain method, it works!!!

gary, i'm praying...its a test... 15# sledge,blue wrench,old military pulling device, bucket of water & old towel, a HELPER,,goodluck. i've never used the chain & jack method but that should act as a puller, you might want to use two nuts to keep the treads in good shape, i fixed one this summer that i finally cut the stump jumper off with the torch & installed a used jumper, be careful..

what i have done to remove stuborn stump jumpers was weld a large not to the end of the hub, then screw in a big bolt and use that as a puller to pop it off, i had to do this to a 5ft JD bushog once and it came off hard but the nut and bolt did the trick. once you get it off just grind off the weld and your all set.

If it would run i would loosen the nut a couple rounds and cut with it until it loosened

Thats sounds a little too risky for me. It has a bolt that goes up into the shaft so you have no way to make sure that it don't fall out. I really doubt with the amount of force I've been putting on it with the hammers if it would loosen that way, I'm in no way 100% sure it wouldn't but anyhow the seal is gone and I can't keep oil in it so I really wouldn't want to run it like that anyhow. I can tear the gearbox down and drop the output shaft out the bottom to put the seal in so maybe I could get a better lick at getting the jumper off with it laying out on a block or two???
Thanks for the idea though I do appreciate it very much and to everybodys help as well. Thanks guys!

Heat the hub of the stump-jumper cherry-red with the blue-wrench. Then take a water hose and cool it fast. It should (maybe pop like a gun) come lose. This has worked for me several time on a Bush-Hog.

I have some brass hammers, some lead hammers and some copper hammers in addition to the urethane dead-blow style. Try tapping with a non-steel hammer on the extreme outer edge of the stump jumper disc to wiggle it on the (probably) tapered spline shaft. Tap first one side then the other to wiggle it. This has worked for me. When reassembling, use nickel based anti-seize on the splines and on the threads. Immediately after purchasing a new mower, disassemble these parts and coat with anti-seize- you'll be glad you did.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies so far. As to respond to a couple of questions on the replies. It is the stump jumper I'm trying to get off, not the gearbox and according to the parts diagram I have off of Deeres web site it is a splined shaft. I doubt very seriously if a gib key would be used on a 15' bat wing shredder stump jumper.
What I have done so far on this is I have heated it several times and pounded and pounded it with both a heavy disk axle and a post driver adn also a short pipe with both a sledge and a smaller 3 pound hammer. I'm not a hundred percent sure as too what yall are meaning by a hub puller, are you refering to a 3 jaw puller or another type of puller? I have a big 3 jaw puller but I doubt there is enough room too get it all fit into the hole it would have to be in. I will probably give it a try on the next round of operating on it. Maybe putting a pull of some sort and then the heat would do the trick. I've done that before and it seemed to work pretty well. I'm a pretty good mechanic on equipment, gotta be these days with $60 an hour shop labor but this has been a you know what. Thanks for the replies again!

Not seeing what I'm not looking at, I wonder if a gib-key is involved. If so, The hub needs to be driven on an 1/8" or less. After that dis-assembly gets easier, perhaps with the help of af a-fore mentioned puller. Good Luck!

Im not sure as to what you are trying to do? Is the gear box stuck or are you trying to take the hub off the output shaft. If you are trying to take the hub off the output shaft, it may be tough to do with out a puller. On my Hause stump jumper the shaft is splined and also tapered. As the hub was all ready bent up I used a long bar to pound down on the hub through the hoe in the top that is used to tighten the bolts that hold the blades on. Pound once then rotae the hub a bit then pound again. Hope this helps.

Have you tried using a hub puller yet? Not going to swear that it is the answer to the problem, but I have used one a few times on shredders and it worked for me.

I've had good luck pulling the hub off of the bottom of a mounted shredder(Bushhog 206 for example) lifted up as high as it will go, then safety blocked up with: 1) Remove shaft nut, remove lock washer, replace nut engaging all threads in nut to minimize damage, but leaving at least an 1/8" or 1/4" gap where you took the locknut out. 2)Figure 8 a good 3/8" or larger transport grade log chain around the cutting blades and under the stump jumper disc leaving enough room to place a 20 ton hydraulic jack between the chain and the nut on the shaft. Carefully pump the jack up, bowing the pulled on edges of the disc at least 1/2". 3)Apply some heat to the hub with a rosebud tip on an acetylene torch. Try a little at first, more if needed. 4) Then use an air chiesel with a hammer or drift pin tip around the hub. The vibration helps break the taper friction loose.

I tried for a day or so to get mine off. I got it off by removing the nut and pin. Soak good with kroil. Wrap a chain around the blades as close to the stumpjumper as possible. place a bottle jack on top of the shaft. Put the chain over the jack and start jacking. I had to readjust the chain a couple of times, had it off in 20 minutes or so.....this worked for me, hope it works for you.....
