Used a 494A for years. Good planter. eem to remember we needed another set of plates every time we bought each seasnon's supply of seed. The duy buying it to plant a few acres of corn for his northern Mi. hunting canp took it away with a pickup truck. The truck to pull it. The truck to haul the plates.

the 494 was started in 1957 for several years, then went to 494A. Mine I bought as a 69 model, if it is or not I cannot verify

Big improvement on the A version was the square bar in front of the frame- for the fertilizer openers. 494 had a pipe there, and the openers would rotate on the pipe when hitting rocks. Hard to hold in position. Good planter in its time.

The openers did have some braces made out of rod, but they didn't stay too straight when they met rocks just under the surface.

I'll second that! I use my 494A for alot of sweet corn. I always seem t have a good stand, but needless to say the summer's heat always gets it. I may plant too much and give alot of it too friends and family, yes the neighbors too. Good times during the summer.
