Is there any real difference in 3x8 Hyd Cylinders

Followed a link from a post on this site to Surplus.com and found they had some reasonable prices on 3x8 hyd. cylinders. I am just curious, is there any real difference in the various cylinders? I know some stuff is just junk like the INDIA made lift arm levelers.

What I am looking for is a couple of double acting 3x8 cyl. with a MAX PSI of 2500. Will be using these to run on with my Oliver 550 and my implements; a) 4340 plow b)10 ft. IHC #37 disk.

Seen a great disparity on pricing but not much differnce on the specs other than push/pull values. Thinking I might be able to save a few bucks if no real differences.

You are best to buy a good name brand cyl. You can get parts for them. And a dealer close by is best.You can spend lost of time running all over the place hunting parts.

I have got many items from Surplus Center. Call them and talk to their specialist on the product you are looking for before you order. They have always given me straight and honest answers. I have bought everything under the sun from hose clamps to tires to hyrdraulics to diesel engines.

Shep, I do not have any financial stake in this question, but my answer is "definately YES" The cylinders with the name "Cross" are probably the best of the ag cylinders that I know of. These cylinders have heavier chrome rods, better oring material and can be easily disassembled and repaired. I have customers that bring me those "discount" cylinders and want me to repair them. I used to try, but I quit. Trying to get seal kits for them is almost impossible and they usually are dificult to disassemble. Now, on the flip side, a person has to ask himself if he will use the cylinder enough to justify the extra cost of a quality cylinder. If I am a weekend farmer and the cylinder does not get a lot of use, I probably would buy the "price competitive" cylinder. Just keep in mind, there are differences. Steve

From my experience, it matters more what kind, and how clean, the hydraulic oil is, than what brand of cylinder you use. I bought an old John Deere wheel disc several years ago. It had a TSC "generic" cylinder on it. I didn't like the looks of the oil in it, so I drained it, and started using it on several impliments I have. I use Pennzoil hydraulic oil. I change filters every chance I get. The old rusty cylinder is going strong with thousands of cycles on it. I wouldn't have bet you a nickle that the TSC cylinder would have lasted a week. I'm not a big fan of their stuff. It prooved me wrong though. It's been running right along side of my Deere cylinders for several years now, without failing. So to put it in a few words, price isn't the determining factor in the lifespan of a hydraulic cylinder. JMHO. John
