Hi and happy holidays to all

What is a rule of how big a tractor should be to use on a large round baler? (300-500lbs)

My help is geting ready to leave home to go off to collage. So now I need to get set up to put up about 22 acres of alone So I'm looking to get a new tractor and baler Thanks Jeff

I'd say ten horse more than recomended to be about right. There has been a time or two the extra horses got me over the water holr or helped pull a hill or any manner of whatever I haven't thought of. Good luck.

What part of MN, I'm by New Ulm more or less?

That's an aweful small round bale, generally you should figure 800-1500#?

I bale bigger, 5x6 bales with an 86 hp tractor. A 4x4 seems a 50-60 hp tractor would work fine. Some balers advertize down to 35 hp, but it does become a tail wagging the dog type of thing.

By 'new' I assume you are looking for good used 'new to you'? Are you thinking chain baler, belt baler, or fixed chamber baler, and what crops do you plan to bale - grass hay, alfalfa, cornstalks, ???

I bale about 25-40 acres myself, just got a round baler a year ago. Still do small squares too, because the hay storage is there - wish I had storage for the round bales, maybe some day.

Ditto from what kyhayman said. 300-500 pounds is awfully small for a large round bale. I would go with at least a 4x4 sized bale. You surely can bale with a 30-40 HP tractor, But you can bale faster and under any conditions with a 60HP or larger tractor. Most of the time you can actually buy the larger tractor for less money as those little utility tractors generally sell for a premium. Also, if you buy a little bit bigger tractor than you need and decide to go with a larger bale later on, you will still have enough tractor to get the job done.

I have a NH 850 and it takes 55HP plus to run it but it is a 6X6 baler. You want one that has what is called open front as it doesn't clog as easy as a closed front. They make balers that can be pulled with a 40 HP tractor but I don't know much about them I also switched over to rounds because I lost my field hands/kid. I like the NH 850 its a chain baler and seems to work well with little up keep

Not sure about your bale size, 300-500 pounds is a pretty small round bale. I'd budget for up to a thousand pounds for a 4x4. There are a lot of ads out there telling you what about baling with 30-40 hp. In my experience you want at least 62 hp with a 4x4. As far as new ones go, I've got experience with NH and JD; both are fabulous. I like the auto wrap (all mechanical) feature on the NH better than the electronic wrap on the JD. From what I have been told Vermeer is a good choice, also. I wanted to look at one when I bough my last NH but the only Vermeer dealer within an hours drive of me only orders as you buy and doesn't stock parts.
