Southern Mn Hay Prices

As per the Hutchison auctioneer yesterday 12-21-03.

Expect grass hay, good quality to be around $100/ton small squares.

High RFV alfalfa in the range of $140/ton small squares.

My experience from years past though at this auction that rounds tend to bring less in price tonnage wise. Doesn't seem to be much in the better quality hay brought in in rounds.

Anyone interested, The Hutch market is held every Wed starting at noon during the winter. Location on the north end of town on Hiway 15.

So far I think we'll be OK for a while. There's enough horses north and east of us where supply is a bit tight. They'll trickle over when word gets out prices are still reasonable.

It will be interesting tho to see what the future holds. Auctioneer told me on Sun to wait till Feb, that's when he expected prices to start shooting up.

Come to eastern Kansas you can buy good native praire grass hay small wire tied squares for around $80 a ton. Big bales $30 a bale.
