Downsizing a JD plow

Have access to a ditch bank 5-16's JD semi mounted plow. Can the back two bottoms be taken off,move the tail wheel assembly to the end of the third bottom and modify the top control arm and make the plow work on a 52HP tractor. The plow is in average shape and my tractor would have the needed power.

not up on JD plows
on Oliver or White if a three bottom than the front hitch is set to center the plow on the tractor and the wheel on the tractor is in. On a four bottom the hitch is centered on the tractor and the wheel is moved out.This puts the hitch in two diferent postions in relation to the front plow bottom. All my books are packed away while I finish the basement or I would list out the different measurements. You need to get a manual for your plow or another semimounted plow that came in 3,4 and 5 bottom sizes as it will explain what I am trying to say and have pictures.

Yes, but it depends on exactly how that particular plow is put together what you need to do. You may have to take a torch to the box beam to shorten it so you can move up the tail wheel. I have seen this done with an old IH 550 plow, shortened from 5 to 3. Do your measuring carefully before you cut and it should work fine.

Tim,
Did you have to do anything to insure the plow would follow straight after the back two bottoms have been removed? Is there any different draft to be considered?

You need to take note of how the tailwheel relates to the last bottom before you cut anything. How far away from the last bottom, how much offset, how high is the pivot mounted on the frame, etc. Also set the hitch straight and note how the wheel is positioned. That way when you shorten the link rod you can get the wheel where it needs to be. Some plows have a longer landside on the last bottom as well. My IH does not have this, but my neighbor's Ford semi-mount does. Not sure if JD plows have that or not. If you find the last bottom has the longer landside, move that to the 3rd bottom.
