Plow ?

We have a 1961 MF35 Deluxe. We have several acres of undisturbed ground that we want to eventually plant. We first need to remove some sage brush. After that is removed what type of plow would be best for initially working the ground? A 12" one bottom or larger, or would a two bottom be better. How much plow will my tractor handle?

Check in the classifieds to the left. I have a Massey Ferguson 2-12" trip beam plow (Model 66) that was the plow available from Massey, at the time your tractor was new. Mine are in new condition. John

A 35 is capable of 2-14" bottoms in all conditions, 2-16" in better conditions. If you have a lot of trash to bury, a 1-16" or a 2-blade disk plow may be a better choice, less likely to plug. Whatever you get, it must be a 3-point plow to work most efficiently with that tractor in hard conditions. People who have tried to use a trailer plow with a Ferguson or Ford are very often disappointed with performance.

Howse plows are cheaply built, and if you're planning on using them a lot in tough ground, replacing shear-bolts will get on your nerves. You'd be happier with a good used Oliver, John Deere or even a newer model Ford plow with safety-trip beams. These will trip out if you hit an obstruction, and all you have to do is back up to reset them. The older Dearborn and Ferguson plows do not have safety-trip beams, which is why I don't like them.

Get yourself a dearborn or ferguson. Between $50 and $200 at auction. I just got a dearborn 2-14 for $50.00 in real good condition.

Richard, you got a bargain!! Around here they bring way more than that. 2 weeks ago I watched a 2 bottom Ferg. plow bring $350. oleblu

That's what they tell me. But I went to another auction a week later and another one went for $150.00. It had both coulters and everything. Mine was missing the coulters. I have a set coming from Wengers. They cost me $100.00 so It's about even. The plow I got even had shiny moldboards and shares, like it was just used.
