I have some CRP acerage I need to control weeds in and am looking at different types of mowers. What are the advantages/disadvantages of a rotary mower vs. a flail/stalk shredder type. The land is rough and rocky. I have a 70 horse tractor to pull it, need something at least eight foot wide to cover the wheel tracks. thanks

Have you checked the CRP regulations on mowing?
They restrict you as to when you can mow, by the time I could mow mine it was to high for a flail
mower. I recomend a rotary

I'm going to vote for a stalk shredder. Not a flail mower, but a full fledged stalk shredder. You can get an old Brady for near nothing and they are not nearly as hard to work on as you might think. With the blades spinning so fast, they don't really cut anyway, they just tear. We use a stalk shredder on over 500 acres a year and never sharpen the blades. Just keep driving. Might have to replace them every few years, but they do a much better job than any rotary mower, and even replacing them isn't too big of a job on a 12 or so foot mower.

The rotary mower has my vote. Flail blades can get expensive to replace. If you have alot of rocks you might want to consider a mower with a slip clutch vs. shear bolt protection.

The flail type does a nice job of shredding residue, but think of all those knives in there that will need sharpening if you run a rock through the machine! A rotary mower with swing-away blades, in my opinion, is a better machine for what you want to do. I'd rather pull a couple big blades off, sharpen them, and then bolt them back in than have to take 30 small blades off, sharpen them all and then put them back. Too much bolt turning.
