Looking for some information. Can anyone make the comparison for me between the MM semi-mounted sickle mowers, like the UM-5, and the MM pull-type sickle mowers? Which came first?
Which did a better job in the field?
What were the major problems with these mowers?
Will modern-day knives and other parts fit in them?
If you had a choice between the semi-mount, or the pull-type mower, which would you choose?

Thank you for your help.

while I do not know any specifics about the mowers you asked about, my personel preference would be a mounted or semi mounted over a pull type bacause I find them easier to back into corners and such when clipping pastures or in odd shaped fields. However it is easier to hook up to a pull type if you only have one tractors and need to hook and unhook often. It is my opinion that as far as sickle mowers go bad cutting is not because of the type of machine as it is the machine being properly timed and adjusted.

If you are going to harvest hay you are better off looking at a CCM drum mower. You can mow as fast as you can ride. You will never clog one up and you can mow with the dew on the hay to prevent leaf loss. They start at $1,800 new and are available in 3 sizes.

Nice picture, great ad. Unfortunatley it does not answer the question about MM sickle mowers.

Hay Dr. That mower looks like what I'm looking for. I need one to mow Township road ditches. Does it go down far enough for the ditch angles with the tractor on the road? I can't tell from the pic, does it have wheels or is it completely mounted? I can call around to some implement dealers to check for them, but do you know of cetain dealers that cary them. JD, IH, Tractor Supply, etc. I'm in s.e. Minn. Thanks Ray
