I'm trying to find some information on a Fast Hitch sickle bar mower that I have. I was wondering what model I have; It has the number M-2566 on the outer housing that holds the upper drive shaft with universal joint yoke attached and the larger belt pulley. It also holds the bolts that are used for the adjustment for the belt. On another different part, there is a number 450874R1 on the main heavy casting that has the main pivots for holding the sickle cutter bar on and of which allow's it to rotate to vertical for transporting. Another question that I have, I was wondering why that even though the sickle bar is held on to the tractor by the two Fast Hitch points, there is also a strange clamp with rod and pivot on the right side that looks like it attaches to the tractor. I wondered why its there for. And now for my last question, How does one remove the universal joint yoke from the pulley shaft in the upper housing that I refered to above, I don't see any bolt or clip that holds it on. Any information and or pictures of this model Sickle bar mower would be gladly appreciated and very helpful.

Thanks, Ray in Pa.

Ray, I`m thinking what you have is a C-21(also called 2C-F21 later on)with a single lift spring or a C-24(also called 2C-F24 later)with double lift springs. This mower was made for use on the Super C or 200.That clamp and rod you see goes to the right rear axle. The axle clamp itself is the same one used for the mounted type mowers used on C`s without fast hitch. All the rod really does is act as an extra brace. My dad mowed for 20 years without ever using that brace,so that shouldn`t be a problem for you. The linkage you describe on the left side is supposed to have a long rod approximately 4 1/2 feet long that was connected to the touch control arm on the left side of the gas tank. Seeing that you don`t have these arms on a 300 Farmall poses somewhat of a problem, but a little ingenuity should solve that problem. Hope I haven`t confused you. Mark

Mark, mine has the single spring. I was kind of curious on how far vertical the cutting bar will lift on its own when setup right. Thanks for the info.

Ray: The model number of that fast hitch mower will be C-28 unless it is a balanced head mower. From your description I think it is pitman drive.

The linkage you speak of has a couple of possibilities. On the Super C and 200 that could be hooked to rockshaft by fuel tank thus holding the hitch and mower rigid and using the rockshaft for raising and lowering bar. However for most of the mowers that hooked to tractor frame at some point under rear axle caries and as the hitch raised it caused bar to raise at a faster and higher rate. My brother has one of these mowers for his 230, it uses bracket fastened to rear axle carrier and pointing downward about 8", for this linkage to hook to. I hope this explains it.

On the U joint, I don't know but would investigate the possibility it is threaded on either by left or right hand thread depending on which way it turns. I know IH did use that system on lighter hp application of the day.

Thanks for the excellent information Hugh. The mower that I have is a pitman drive. The mower was originally used on a Super C by the previous owner. I bought it to use it with my Farmall 300, Not sure if its compatible to work on my tractor though? I think your right about the universal joint yoke being threaded on, I found that the large casted housing that has the bushing's for holding the pivoting pins that allows the sickle bar to pivot vertically, was threaded onto the main (approx. 2") thick steel bar. I also found out today that this thick steel bar is bent rearward alittle just a head of the large casted housing at the adjustment bolt, clamp area. Its the adjustment bolt, clamp area used to rotate the sickle bars cutting blades up or down in relationship to the ground. I don't think the heavy steel bar should have this bend, not sure though. Also Hugh, On the linkage and attachment, where you meaning the linkage on the left side and left of the drive pulley. I do see where a rod must of attached there and I wondered how it was activated to raise the sickle bar blade. I was hoping to attach it as you explained, not sure if it will work on my 300 though. The other pivot or stabilizer bar that I don't know about, is located and mounted on right side of the right side Fast Hitch point. It is mounted just above the mount of the break away hitch. Not sure, but looks like it was a secondary stabilizer bar with which the other end of it might of mounted to tractor in some way.

Thank, Ray in Pa.

Ray: I never had one of these mowers, what I'm telling you is based on how I've seen mower mounted on 230. I know the linkage on the left standing behind the mower, hooks to bracket clamped to axle carrier and extending downward about 1' The linkage has a turnbuckle type adjustment for setting length. As the hitch raises this causes linkage to lift through its rockshaft on mower bar. I have a feeling the axle clamp device on my brothers 230 is not factory equipment. I think I have seen one whereby that linkage hooks somehow to bottom of fast hitch lift cylinder. To bad someone with one of these mowers wouldn't come in on this.

My dad had one of the semi-mounted mowers that bolted to flat cross bar of Super A, H, M and even some Cs were fitted with that type drawbar. The mowing mechanism and lift of cutter was much the same. In fact the mowing mechanism and driveline parts on most IH mowers of that era were very similar. Your mower the C-28 was also made in a 3 point hitch version. It had a lever that pivoted at lower link pin when under the left lower link down half way and oposite end activated the same linkage you have

The problem today with these mowers is they originally had a kit or package designed for tractor you were going to use mower on. I'm sure with a bit of ingenuity that mower can be made to work on your 300. To bad you couldn't find a parts book for your mower. Keep you eye on YT auction or e-bay, your bound to see one before PA mowing season.

Hugh you are right about the 230 mower then on the right side there was a chain to stop you from lowering it to far. We wore one out on a 230 that was when we got a haybine. Had wore out a mower on a super A also a N H trailer mower don,t remember the number on it. Mowed 40 acres a day many times with two mowers.

Hugh, I have really appreciated your help with your knowledgeable and excellent information. Your knowledge on farmalls and how these implements work on them has saved me alot of time by me not having to do so much experimenting to set them up right. I'm very amazed as to how many variations there are on the IH implements, including the Farmall tractors, that there seems to be no two alike or are identical. I would like to find a parts and manual book like you said and I will now start looking for one. Also Hugh, I used your excellent advice that you explained to me last spring for growing my Potatoes this past summer, This gave me the biggest and best crop of potatoes in 20 years of planting.

Also Jimmy King, I'm currently using a NH 7' sickle bar trailer mower during the growing season behind my Farmall 300 with excellent results. They are a nice cutting machine and heavy duty, although I have never had to cut more than 5 acres in a day.

Thanks, Ray in Pa.

Ray: I'm glad to hear the potato advice worked so well for you. I grew potatoes in the sandy loam soils back in Nova Scotia, always had a great crop. Now I guess I will have to reinvent the wheel. I can't get them to grow worth a damn in this SW Ontario heavy clay. One old timer here has told me if I ever do get a good crop, I will need an excavator to dig them.

I have a few ideas up my sleeve, I will overcome.
