Need advice on old hay crimpers that attach behind sickle movers. Thinking about locating one to use for conditioning alfalfa hay next season. If they can be found--worth buying--price??

I have been looking in my area for a crimper with no luck. The only one I seen sell at a sell was a John Deere 20. It was froze up and looked rough. Brought $70.00. I want to hook it up to a 455 N.H. sickle. Been looking for a 404 N.H. crimper. If anybody know where one is close to Indiana let me know. Thanks, John

John :

Where in Indiana are you ? I am in central Michigan (Ovid), and have an International 2A that I haven't used in a couple of years after I bought a haybine. I think that it is still in pretty good shape. I paid $150 for it 5 years ago, but it sounds like I might have paid too much ! Let me know if you are interested.

I am in North Central Indiana. Peru area. I am first going to try to find a N.H. crimper. Parts for other N.H. hay equipment has been easy to get and decent prices and I have a good local dealer. If I don't have any luck which I haven't had yet. I am not against using a IH crimper. How many acres did you crimp with it? Have you ever used it directly behind the sickle mower and does that work pretty good? Thanks, John

I used it on 15 acres a year, 3 cuttings, for 3 years. I used it stand-alone, as my sickle bar mower didn't have the PTO shaft pass-through. It did a good job, though. It uses a remote cylinder to adjust it's height. I used a ratchet jack for the first 2 years, but that was frustrating. It was a lot better when I got a tractor with remote hydraulics to run it with. Its rolls are in pretty good shape.

Peru's near Kokomo, isn't it ? That would be a drive of over 4 hours ...

It is about 20 minutes north of Kokomo. My mower has a hudraulic lift cylinder also. My Oliver 77 has dual two way hydraulics so that would work I think. Do you have a digital picture of it?

John :

I put it up as photo-add 54185 in implements for $100. You have first call on it, but I don't think that I'll be inundated with other offers ...

I hooked it up right after I took the picture, and it still spun.

Let me know via email ...

I think I have some parts around here for a 2A yet, so if you get it, let me know, I'll look.

I know where there is a New Idea unit sitting in the weeds. worked when last used. Give me a bid see if he will take. The last one I seen sell in my area brought 125.00

I just saw one sell this last weekend. It was an IH that was in real good shape. It brought $55. I saw a New Holland sell in early October for $75 and it was nearly like new. With Mower Conditioners and such these are not very popular but I can see one of these working just as well for smaller acreages as a full haybine setup. If I had some hay to do I would run a sickle bar and conditioner tag a long set up. It's much cheaper to get set up this way than the haybine.
