Building a barn..Need advice on grading

I have a shedrow pole barn that I want to enclose by adding a "mirror image" other side. Problem is that the grade drops two feet from north end to south. I was planning on using fill to raise the grade, but the ground was so darn wet around here, now it's all frozen into chunks. Was wondering if I could use crusher run or gravel to raise the grade, maybe top it with 4-6" of stone dust. I plan on setting the poles down 4'. If I use gravel, should I set them first, then backfill? Augering through 2 or 3' of gravel don't sound like fun.
Any and all suggestions welcome.

If I where you I'd fill the bottom layer in with over size and the go with a little finer rock and then maybe what is called around here, dirty base. And yes set the poles first then fill.

Chip: I think I would set the poles first, your right augering through that gravel will not cause you a lot of enjoyment. The worst part is the gravel will continue to fall in hole, making it awfully hard to get the pole to bottom of hole.
